And so after solving a lot of problems in my program code, I was already happy because it is almost working properly. I just have found out that it was calculating, I think, correctly the source function of each point, it was just having a small output problem (a problem with the correct value not being saved in the output file). And then, I spotted it... An impossible value... Something that made me laugh, almost insanely, due to absurdity of what I was seeing on the screen... The calculated optical depth, something that should have the value of the order of a unit, was with values of an order of magnitude of 10^5 and reaching even 10^9. I don't think any photon could cross that region not even in a googol years... :P (I am just exagerating about the googol, of course. And for people who does not know what in the Nine Hells, also called Baator, is a googol, it is 10^100, or 1 followed by onde hundred zeros)

The only thing I can do for the time being is to laugh... Then I will try to find out where in the program lies this problem!

For people who does not know what does optical depth means, it is related to the escape probability of photon to leave some region of space. The higher the value, the smaller is the chance of it to escape before being scattered or absorved by the medium, meaning that more opaque is the medium. That is the kind of thing that an astrophysicist tries to calculate, and/or uses in their job. Total madness if you want to know my opinion about that, but it is also pure beauty! =D

Another problem, but the good thing is that I could saw it before going further. Now I have to spend some time on it, and I guess it will be quite an amount of some time... Bah! And I am still laughing... HAUhAUhUAHauhuHAuHAUhUAHuHAuhaa....

Calor futuro...

Após resolver dar uma olhada na previsão do tempo para os próximos dias aqui em Ann Arbor, deparo-me com o fato de que hoje está sendo o dia mais frio desta semana que está começando. O detalhe não tão agradável é que a temperatura hoje está em torno de míseros 31 oC. Os próximos dias serão infernais pelo visto, só o ar-condicionado aqui da minha sala pra me salvar, ou me deixar confuso na hora decidir como eu vou sair de casa. Bermuda ou calça? Bah...

O pior é que a noite, durante esses dias a temperatura chega nos 15 oC, ou menos, mas a noite também só começa depois das 22h, pelo menos por enquanto, porque daqui há alguns meses, a noite vai começar às 4 da tarde!

Enquanto isso, eu tenho esperança no futuro. (Inverno branco e gelado.)

A new quest is open in Ann Arbor...

And so it came to pass that I have started a new quest here in Ann Arbor. Again, I am looking for a place to live, and this time I expect a place where I can be connected with the world. It would be cool to live in a place where I can play Guitar Hero! (Damn, I need to play it... This thing is really addictive...) But if I have nice roommates, that would be enough for me...

Vista & Internet at home

I have decided to use Windows Vista in my computer. It is really not as bad as people say. It is heavier than Windows XP, of course, but the reason is that there are many new features, and it is also much more attractive than the old Windows XP. People usually complain about compatibility issues, and until now I have not observed any kind of compatibility issue here. But it is not an OS than can be used in any kind of computer, it is really a resource eater. At this moment, Vista is using more than 1GB of my memory, luckly I have 2GB, but I also have some programs running in the background. If I tweak it a little and stop some unuseful things to run in the background, I am sure I can free some good amount of resource. There is also something called Windows Superfetch that studies how you use the computer, and based on it pre-load the most used programs in the RAM at the startup, so this thing eats some memory, but it is also very useful, as it make your prefered programs open and run faster, as it also give priority to these programs over background processes. And I can always turn off the Aero, and have Vista running without any of the 3D-effects that it usually have, and then free some memory too, but I am not doing that. It is beautiful to look at all those effects, and after long time using Windows XP, I got kind of tired of the XP look. I am using it for not so long a time, and I still have much to learn about it, but until now I am liking it. I do not recommend its use if you have less than 1GB of RAM, but it is perfect if you have 2GB as I do. If you have more than 2GB of RAM, I recommend you using Vista-64, as Vista-32 has some issues when using more than 2GB of RAM, and it is a little tricky to make it recognize properly more than the 2 first gigabytes of RAM, due to a 32-bit OS capacity to address at most 4GB of memory, and also having to address the VGA card memory, and virtual memory.

Eventually I am going to install the Linux in another partition, but I am going to wait some time, as I was having some problems with compatibility issues with some of my new computer components, that are not yet recognized by it, during my first installation try. And as I do not have a reliable Internet connection at home, it is hard to look for solutions in forums for those problems, and then correct them.

Regarding Internet at home, I will not have anything like that at home for some time yet. I will have to try to "steal" the poor wireless signals I have at home, at the most uncomfortable places, at the lowest speed, that makes me more annoyed than relieved. My roommate who is in San Francisco, and blocked the cable TV/Internet, before she left, could not unlock it before the programmed unlock-time, that is in September. I really do not think she tried hard to unlock it, but as she is far away, and I will be moving from her apartment at the end of next month, I will not complain about it with her. And one more month without Internet at home won't kill me. After all, I can burn some time of work in the University doing things I should be doing at home, as she may be thinking (What a brazillian guy would do on the Internet? Do they have Internet there?? I don't think he has lots of thing to do on the Internet after all. I won't lose my time trying harder to solve this for him. I don't even think he knows how to use properly a computer.). No more comments about this issue!

Next time I will write about my personal view of the american society. And I will write it in portuguese! (If you know what that means!)

And I don't have the Harry Potter book yet, so no comments about it either!! :P

Mini-hotspot

Achei um micro-mini-hotspot de wireless aqui no apartamento. O sinal é tão fraco que chega a ser pior que acesso dial-up. Nem sei se consigo terminar esta postagem antes do sinal desaparecer. :P
Estou num canto da sala de TV, perto da varanda, sentado no chão, com o Klatrymadon em cima de uma cadeira. Muito precário!!! E ainda por cima não tem ninguém no MSN pra eu encher a paciência. Bah!!!

O que aconteceu com as pessoas de férias sem nada pra fazer que passavam as noites no MSN?? Nem fiquei tanto tempo assim sem aparecer a noite! :P

Coisa mais "loser" ficar empolgado a noite por que achei um mini-hotspot em casa. "Loser" nada, mó doido aê!!! Principalmente depois de quase três semanas tentando "roubar" algum sinal de wireless desprotegido do apartamento sem conseguir. Só que esse sinal podia ser melhorzinho, do jeito que está, se eu resolver fazer algum "download", vou passar é raiva. A qualquer momento o sinal pode desaparecer... Aliás, vou passar raiva se quiser fazer qualquer coisa que requeira uma banda de dados mais larga que uma rede dial-up pode oferecer. Mas por enquanto tá valendo... Valeu "Big Green"! Hehehehehe

E ô coisa mais desconfortável, digitar sentado no chão com o computador em cima de uma cadeira. Detalhe, estou no escuro porque a lâmpada resolveu queimar uns dias atrás e ainda não deu tempo de comprar outra pra trocar. Putaquepariu!!! HAUhUAhUAHuHAha... :P

Novas 7 Maravilhas do Mundo & Gordon Conference

Eis então que o Cristo Redentor foi eleito uma das novas 7 Maravilhas do Mundo. Definitivamente não concordo! Pode até ser o símbolo do Brasil, e como Brasileiro eu deveria estar achando ótimo, mas acho que entre os monumentos votáveis, o Cristo Redentor seria das minhas últimas opções. Talvez eu votasse no Cristo Redentor, caso esta escolha fosse feita daqui há alguns séculos, 500 ou 600 anos pelo menos, e este ainda estivesse de pé. Existem outros monumentos que representam realizações muito mais notáveis que o Cristo Redentor, e que depois de mais de mil anos ainda estão de pé. E historicamente, ou culturalmente falando, a maioria deles são mais importantes que o Cristo Redentor. Talvez se estivessem limitado a época da construção nos últimos 100 ou 200 anos, eu votaria nele com quase certeza, mas não dá pra comparar o Cristo Redentor, com as Pirâmides do Egito, a única das maravilhas do mundo ainda de pé, Angkor-Wat, Stonehenge, Acropolis, e nem mesmo com nenhuma das maravilhas eleitas.

Pra quem não sabe, as novas maravilhas do mundo são: A Grande Muralha da China, Petra (Jordânia), Machu Picchu (Peru), Chichén Itzá (México), O Coliseu (Itália), Taj Mahal (Índia) e o Cristo Redentor.

Voltei de uma conferência em South Hadley, MA, ontem. 12 horas de viagem na ida e na volta. A conferência (Gordon Research Conference: Origins of the Solar System) foi ótima. Encontrei algumas pessoas de outros países, mas a maioria absoluta eram americanos, como o esperado. Foi um encontro de astrofísicos, planetologistas, geólogos e geofísicos. Um grupo bem amplo de cientistas, mas mesmo assim não estava lotada, talvez umas 140 pessoas no total. Com tanta coisa diferente, não dá pra entender tudo, e é fácil ficar perdido nas apresentações fora da sua área, mas mesmo assim dá pra aprender uma coisa ou outra. Mas é interessante ver os vários grupos tentando interagir entre si, tentando ligar as coisas, e engraçado às vezes, os conflitos entre teorias de várias áreas diferentes tentando explicar a mesma coisa. À noite, após o jantar e o término das palestras, havia uma segunda sessão de posters, mas com cerveja de graça. Eu que não sou fã de cerveja, bebia pelo menos umas duas long-necks por noite. Infelizmente não tinha nada do meu gosto. Tive que beber uma cerveja chamada UFO, que não é muito boa, mas eu tive que experimentar só por causa do nome.

Comi lagosta pela primeira vez na vida, e é uma tarefa árdua pra dizer o mínimo, pelo menos pra primeira vez. Tinha até um manual de instruções ensinando como fazer! HAUhUahUAHuHAuHAuhAa... Bom... Comi, e não gostei muito, mas valeu a experiência. Foi divertido aprender o processo. Duas das pessoas na mesa, desistiram de comer na metade, achando muito difícil, mas eu não desisti até o final, e cumpri a missão! Ha! Talvez eu demore um pouco pra querer comer lagosta de novo, mas não é tão ruim que eu não queira comer nunca mais. Só tem um gosto diferente...

O lugar onde foi realizada a conferência, Mount Holyoke College, é muito bonito também. Tirei algumas fotos que depois eu vou disponibilizar na Internet.

Não estava pensando em escrever nada hoje não, mas devido a data de hoje, vou escrever alguma bobagem aqui.

Ontem assisti Transformers. É bem legal o filme, vale a pena assistir. A estória do filme não é lá das melhores não, mas o filme é divertido assim mesmo. Vale a pena assistir no cinema. Os robos são bem legais, e as transformações ficaram bem legais também. O único problema é que eles são tão ágeis, que as lutas ficam muito confusas. Fica difícil saber onde termina um, e começa o outro transformer. O filme tem um ar de comédia também.

Ontem comprei três livros, um de ficção científica chamado Paradox: The Nulapeiron Sequence - Book I, de um tal John Meaney. Nunca ouvi falar do sujeito, mas li críticas boas sobre o livro, e resolvi comprar pra ler. O outro é do Neil Gaiman, Smoke and Mirrors, e finalmente um livro com várias estórias do H.P. Lovecraft. Comecei a ler Paradox, e estou achando muito estranho ainda, ainda estou sendo apresentada para a ambientação futurista do autor, e existem vários conceitos não muito bem definidos ainda, isso confunde, mas talvez melhore.

Post 91. Not a prime! The next is 97.

• Now that I have a computer I am watching Heroes again. I begin to watch it from the start again, and I have noticed a little improvement in my english understanding.
• I still did not watch the last episode of Lost.
• I still could not "steal" a wireless signal at home, and I don't know why. I guess I have to wait sometime before having Internet at home. Bah...
• I finished all my books. I need more books!!
• Sunday I am going to a Conference in South Hadley, MA, called Gordon Conference: Origins of the Solar System. And I am gonna spend a week there. People are going by car, and it will be a 10h to 12h trip. Lots of pictures to be taken.
• I may be going to watch Transformers today. I have yet to decide it.
• Next year Fallout 3 will be released!! I want very much to play that!!
• I also want to play Guitar Hero 2, Guitar Hero 3, Guitar Hero: The 80's, and Rock Band!! Rock Band is something like Guitar Hero, but you can play any of the instruments, and even sing. Awesome! I miss to play Guitar Hero! Damn, I need to play it... :P
  
• This month Monster Manual 5 was released. I guess they should try release something different. They should release supplements about each of the Planes. I am tired of only monsters, and classes!!
• At this moment I am hearing the classical, and one of the best of Black Sabbath's: Heaven and Hell.
• This is a worthless dot, and is here just for the post to have a prime numbers of dots. I don't like the 11, though, so I will continue until the next one...
  
• I think I am going to buy some books today. I just don't know what, yet...

Klatrymadon

Finalmente após mais de um mês sem um computador, e já quase esquecendo como se escreve em português, ontem recebi em casa meu notebook. Agora, com um teclado configurado para acentuação, e um computador sempre por perto, será bem mais fácil atualizar isto aqui. Bom, isto se eu conseguir roubar o sinal de alguma rede "wireless" de algum desvisado, ou algum vizinho altruísta (ou algum pervertido) que gosta de compartilhar o seu sinal de rede com todo mundo. Por algum motivo obscuro, eu não consegui fazer isto ontem do apartamento. Hoje tento de novo, mas por enquanto estou escrevendo do Campus da universidade.

Ainda tenho que configurar, e provavelmente vou reinstalar o sistema operacional aqui, mas por enquanto vou usando o Vista mesmo. Depois eu tiro uma foto do Klatrymadon! :P

Assim que for possível eu começo a disponibilizar algumas fotos de Ann Arbor. E eu realmente vou ter que me reacostumar a escrever utilizando acentos, mas felizmente eu ainda lembro todas as regras de acentuação! É que após algum tempo sem ter que me preocupar em digitar acentos, dá uma certa preguiça, mas eu vou respeitar minha língua, como sempre fiz! :P

Ontem também terminei de ler o 8o. livro, desde que cheguei aqui, uma média de um livro a cada 4 ou 5 dias. Os livros que eu comprei aqui já acabaram, e não sei se devo comprar mais, e tentar manter essa média absurda. Acho que mais um não vai me fazer mal não... er...
