Rock Band - Run to the Hills

After I watched this video, I realized that I NEED to play this game. I don't care if I am loser who does not know how to play any kind of instrument, unless if it is in a video game (and not a good player even in a video-game). But I NEED to have a Playstation 3 just to play this game. And I am almost doing that... Very near indeed, after I have watched this video...
This is a Full Expert Band playing "Run to the Hills" by Iron Maiden \m/,

By the way... Who wants to be part of my band when I get this game? =D

P.S.: You might have noticed that the voice is not exactly Bruce Dickinson's voice, and it is true. One of the players is the singer, and he did a excellent job in my humble opinion! The game is awesome!!!

Doom 3

I have been playing Doom 3 for sometime already. I have not finished the game yet, but I am almost there. It is an old game, released in 2004, and it is basically a remake of the classic Doom from 1993, with improved graphics (and what a improvement) and a more detailed storyline.

The game is just a First-Person Shooter, with somewhat of a background story behind it, and the graphics are really impressive. The year is 2145. You are a marine that works for the UAC (Union Aerospace Corporation) and is transfered to the UAC Martian Base Complex. You arrive in the place totally clueless, and you just know that the UAC has a huge research complex in Mars, and you are going to replace some other marine in that place. Together, in the same spaceship, came two high-profile guys for some unknown reasons.

When you start to walk around the base, just in the beginning, you have the feeling that everything in that place is almost real. People talking to each other, seemingly real news on the TV, people working around the base. You have to register yourself in the base, get your equipment (a pistol, some ammunition, a lantern, a body armor and your personal data assistant - PDA), and look for your commander to present yourself to him and receive your first assignment. You have to look for a missing scientist that seems to be somewhere in the old communications building. The marine (you) went after him, walking through the base and eventually meeting other people around the base and talking to them (some lame talking). After you took this long walk around the base, you find the hidden scientist. He was trying to send a message out to the UAC Board on Earth telling about some hideous experiments taking place in the Martian soil.

When the scientist was almost done uploading the message, the computers started to act weird, power surges happening all over the place, strange noises coming out of nowhere. Something hit the scientist and he turned into a mindless zombie. You start to hear marines screaming through the comlink, a lot of shooting, people dying everywhere. The zombie-scientist in this moment decided that he is hungry and want to eat your brains at that very moment, and attacked you. You shot him dead, and then the fun starts...

Your sergeant in command is alive somewhere, and he gave you an order to go back to the barracks. You start to backtrack your way until the barracks, just to find that there seems to be no survivals after all. All that survived are now mindless zombies, and they are after everything that moves and is still alive, and that means you. Weird... Eventually you discover that the base was overrun by demons, and that they are hiding everywhere, and they want you dead...

The base scenario of the game is: your character walking alone in the base, the lights are not working properly, and when it is dark, it is REALLY dark, sometimes out of nowhere you hear noises, other times you see bodies being dragged away by some hidden creature, or being thrown around by an unknown force. And when you least expect, from the darkness some creatures jump at you... Most of the time you can hear the creatures, but other times, they just appear out of nowhere to attack you. The worst is when you are walking and then suddenly you hear cries, wails, and even babies crying, and nothing is around you... The game atmosphere is perfectly creepy, it really makes you tense and scared sometimes. If you are playing alone in your house, in the dark, I can assure you, you will be afraid, and you might even start to hear weird noises in the house... But it is fun to shoot at zombies and demons!! :P

To help develop the storyline, you find around bodies other people's PDAs, and you can hear some saved logs, and their e-mails. That helps to give you the feeling that the bodies you see scattered around are from "real" people, and not just a body. And you can read or listen to their views about the things that were happening around the base in the past few months. That is very interesting....

The game is basically that, but now I am gonna start to talk about some inconsistencies I found while playing the game. Ok, I know I should not look for these kind of things in a game like Doom, but anyway, the game designers should had thought better about some details in the game.

First, you have a lantern, but every time you use it, you have to lower your guard. You can not hold the lantern at the same time your are holding your weapon. It is 2145, and every gun should have a place to fix some light source in its body. Maybe, in the Doom Universe, the concept of a light sources fixed in weapons is far too advanced for the weapon designers compared with spaceships, terraforming, planetary colonies, plasma guns, interplanetary travel, teleportation devices, gravity generators and all those other basic and primitive technological concepts. It is a totally different Universe where there are gates to Hell hidden inside ancient ruins on Mars. Who knows!? But anyway, it would mess a little bit with the dark atmosphere, but I don't think that it would destroy the frightening scenario. It is just lame to have to change lantern and weapons almost all the time.

The game takes place on Mars, so I guess it would be very fun if we could feel how is to be in Mars, in an ambient with a lower gravity than Earth, where you can jump much higher with less effort. That won't spoil nothing in the game play. Oh... well... The marine seems to be carrying at least 300 kg of equipment whenever he goes, huge guns, countless amounts of ammunition for every kind of guns he has, a body armor, dozens of grenades and rockets... Wow... Yeah... Thats is the reason why he can't jump as high as I would think he would do on Mars, he is heavy burdened pack mule!

I still have not understood yet why my character is the only one who was not turned into a mindless marine zombie. Every other marine was turned into a zombie, but mine... Is the Force stronger with this marine? Or has he demon blood running through his veins? Well... Whatever...

Why, in blazes, do people leave pieces of armor, medkits and ammunition hidden in dark corners all over the base?? And why those stupid demons don't destroy all the medkits they found?? I guess they never thought a lone marine would be their Doom!! ]-]

Another problem is that the game is totally linear, you have only one path though the game and that is it. You just have to shoot and kill demons, go always ahead, and then you finish it... It is a long game, there is only the straightforward way to beat it, I probably won't play it again, but it is VERY funny... Sometimes I miss these mindless-shoot-at-all-you-can-see type of game. If you want some fun without thinking to much, you don't have any heart problems and do not start to cry whenever something scares you, Doom 3 is for you!! =D

Pré-Natal

Turning Point ?

...and so, a future that I thought was still very far in the future, starts to unfold before my very eyes. Now I am certain I am reaching a turning point in my life, but not a turning point when only one important decision will matter, this time the decisions to be made are more than just one and they are of much more significance than all the others I have made so far...

And in the Dreamscape, something was unleashed... Something Evil... Something that I shall face alone and soon...

Pistons 109 X 87 Warriors

Detroit Pistons contra Golden State Warriors.

The Thorpe of Xaos

The thriving settlement of Xaos gained the status of thorpe after it gained its 51st habitant. Unfortunately the economic structure of the thorpe is not enough to grant employment to every habitant, so right now the city seeks some bold entrepreneur to bring some industries to our beloved Xaos. If you are such entrepreneur, just call our beloved mayor to discuss the terms of the agreement (you also have the rights to choose a proper name for your business), but if you are just interested in moving to the city feel free to choose the right spot for you and build your house! =D

E por favor, me corrijam caso eu tenha dito alguma bobagem aqui! Obrigado! :)

Senseless post about an unfinished post

I am so tired today, that the senseless post I was writing here started to become more serious than I wanted it to be, so I just decided to stop. But I was feeling that something must be written here so I decided to write a post about an unfinished post. Maybe the unfinished post will be finished in the future, or maybe not, but I will only tell about it, when I finish it...

For now, I will write people a secret!

Take heed and bear witness to the truths that lie herein, for they are the last legacy of the Horadrim. (Ok. The Secret Order of the Horadrim Magi has been extinct for centuries, Deckard Caim was the last one of them, and I guess he might be dead for a very long time right now, or maybe he still roams the land as a very ancient guy, or even as an undead. But anyway... ) And so it came to pass that the one who HATES cheese passionately is green, but he does not make photosynthesis.

And beware!! Gold fishes can kill you while you sleep! The Dreamscape is a dangerous place.

By the end, I have written TWO great secrets... No more secrets for a while, and now it ends with Moonchild, the beginning of the Seventh! The Bornless One, and maybe the best. Who? The Ancient of Days or the First Fallen!? Everything seems scrambled, but sometimes clarity is hidden beneath your bed.

The Settlement of Xaos

I loved so much this MyMiniCity idea, that now I created a permanent section in the right sidebar of the blog. For now the only option I have to make my city evolve is to increase its population, but as soon as I got other option I will start to link these options in the "Help to build Xaos" section. Only one click per visitor per day is considered by the site, but if you go there once everyday the city will start to grow in a steadily way.

The section is just plain HTML, so it will not update itself automatically. But I will try to update the image showing Xaos in that section at every few days, and I will try to update the population daily.

I know that I don't have a lot of visitors here, but if my few visitors click there, the city will start to grow, slowly, but grow. And I just want to see it being built with your help right now! =D

Just for you to have an idea about how many visitors I got daily here, today I got a record number of visitors, a huge amount of 14 visitors. I guess my city will grow very slooooowly... :P

My Mini City - Xaos

Now I have a virtual city, and of course my city is called Xaos. Xaos, actually, is a fabled city in the outer rim of The Concordant Domain of the Outlands, and is the city gate that has a portal leading to The Ever-Changing Chaos of Limbo. My city is named after that fabled place, that, in my opinion, is one of the most awesome places in the whole Multiverse. And Xaos is a name that can reflect with great precision the reality of my home country, Brasil (as it is written in Portuguese).

Anyway, this is one of the coolest ideas I have seen so far. It is like a online version of the old, and classic of classics, game Sim City. And with each visit, the city gains one more inhabitant, and as the city starts to develop, you can add industries, increase security, improve transportation networks, etc, and everything is done just by having people visiting your city!

I just created my city, so Xaos's current population is 2. Help me developing my city, by just visiting it. I promise I will be a good mayor! =D

The idea came from this Brazilian blog: Quarentedois.

A Supernatural War

So the War did start. At this very moment I am fighting a supernatural war on Facebook. Zombies, Vampires, Werewolves, Slayers all fighting among themselves... What started as some random attacks now is turning into a much broader conflict of greater proportions. The saddest is to know that behind all the attacks were some so-called friends. We can trust no one in a war! There are hideous people even throwing some friends to serve as food to the other enemies minions, just to gain a small tactical advantage over other enemies. War is so sad! But even that being true, I would never retreat, I will fight to the end, even if I have to sacrifice some friends to a zombie, a vampire or a werewolf, as a way to have my revenge! And I am vengeful one, I will avenge all the attacks my minions suffered in this war, being it caused by friend or foe. Beware, my Facebook friends, for this war is far from over, and I won't be in the losing side!

That is just a small game that is happening in the Facebook right now. We can create zombies, vampires, werewolves, slayers, and then fight other friends' creatures. We gain points when our creature creates another creature to join its army, when we fight and win, of course, or when we simply start biting people in our friends lists. And with more points, more powerful become your creature. So everybody is attacking everybody randomly just to become more powerful, and it is starting to get a little large, but only few of my friends are yet infected. But it is fun, anyway!! I started as a zombie, then decided to create a vampire, and just stick with that. But then I was recruited as a slayer, and now I joined the army of a werewolf friend. As I would say in portuguese: Virou putaria! :P

I am deeply needing a powerful and insightful divine inspiration... My mind is steadily frozen... I guess I need to talk with The Cube!!

And I also need a new computer in my office... My computer is cursed... (You cursed, overheating-friendly P4 HT... I hate you!!! Grrrrr.... ]-/ )

Picasa Albuns And Blog Updates

Just a small update. I uploaded some new pictures to Picasa. Some pictures of the trip do Washington DC, and some pictures of Ann Arbor, my house here, and the neighborhood. There is even a video showing The Cube.

I also updated the links section of the blog. Added some new links, and divided the old section in two. One for other people blogs, and another for general web pages. And also added a new javascript applet that shows some currency rates (I usually follow these exchange rates in a daily basis, so I decided to add them to my blog in order to not waste time looking fro these rates everyday).

Your health and the Earth destruction.

Today, wandering through the cyberspace, two things caught my attention. Two very interesting top 10's. The first one is "The Top 10 Bad Things That Are Good For You". I am not going to spoil that here, but it worth to see it. I, particularly, loved the number 7. (I guess I will turn myself in an alcoholic just to have a "good" reason to use that... Hehehehehe).

At the same place, looking at the other Top 10's, I found this other one: "Top 10 Ways to Destroy Earth". The fun in that one is a little more restricted to physics, but if you are nerd enough, I am sure you will understand and laugh at least a little bit with that.

My source was a very interesting blog (in portuguese), that it is very worth to take a look if you can understand it: Favoritos.

Eu e o Batata ficamos gritando pros caras do Megadeth: "Toca Paranoid!!!" (No CD Nativity in Black - Tribute to Black Sabbath, eles tocaram Paranoid). Fazia parte do P.E.T.

Fui a vários shows de Metal, vi o Iron tocar no Rock in Rio em 2001, vi o Metallica tocar em 1999, e vários outros shows.

Cansei. O Entropia é inexorável. Espero aprender muito ainda.

Chaostry 1311

A change...
Weird, out of control
Is it wrong?
I like it, but I don't know...
Confused
Is that The Cube!
A path has opened,
But it is not the Cube's doings
Everything is blurred
Chaos, again, Xaos...

A pale gaze upon me...
Not me, an avatar
The deeper I look,
The more of me I see...
And more lost I get
Is there any way out?
Do I want to get out?

Danger to the blood?
Blood sweet blood...
But there is also magic...
Magic can heal,
but Magic is not always what is seems to be...
Always remember that.

Is there a real danger?
And remember that the eyes are not mine...
I can't see the eyes, but I can feel the gaze...
.sigh.

Is there any sense? No... Just scrambled ideas...

Washington D.C. - Saturday

Saturday morning we left Fairfax, and then we went to The Mall in Washington DC. The Mall is like a gigantic corridor that goes from the Capitol Building to the Lincoln Memorial. It is about 3km from one side to the other, and at the sides there are nothing less than 6 Smithsonian Museums (National Museum of American History, National Museum of Natural History, National Gallery of Art, National Museum of the American Indian, National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of African Art), there are other art galleries too, the United States Botanic Garden, and a lot of amazing monuments. Needless to say that is impossible to visit everything around there in just two days. In the middle of the Mall, between the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial, is the Washington Monument, that huge Obelisk, that I never thought was so huge, but it is almost 170m high, and you can actually go inside it, and then see the city from above.

Our first stop was near the Washington Monument, to get the tickets (free) to go inside it later, and after that I had to go to the National Air and Space Museum. My friend did not like the idea of going there, but as she had never been there, she went with me. Even, she being an astrophysicist and all, she thought those things were just boring. But those are the kind of things that make my eyes shine with glee (totally nerd stuff). Inside the Museum there are many replicas, and real pieces of equipment used in space missions, and also from a lot of airplanes. The replicas are most of the time, REAL size replicas. There is a real size Hubble Space Telescope Replica there, and I never thought the Hubble was that huge. After seeing that I started to think about the size of the Space Shuttle, that could carry the HST in one piece to its orbit. There is also a real size replica of the SkyLab, the first US space station, and you can actually go inside that. Some real planes scattered throughout the Museum, even a true Boeing 747. The place was simply amazing. I was awed inside that place.

When we enter the astronomy gallery, a place full of telescopes, and telling the history of astronomical observations, there was a guy pointing the a small telescope to a place in the wall, where there is a small image of the moon. I barely payed any attention to that, but my friend (also an astrophysicist), decided to look at that, and then the man decided to explain how a telescope works to her. The man asked some "rethorical" questions while explaining it, and she was answering every one correctly to him, but the guy only insisted that she was interested and kept going. I was not there, she told me she was having some fun, and decided not to tell him that she was an astronomer. :P

After that we kept walking through the Museum, I was awed and she bored. I will have to compensate her for that some day. We stop in the museum gift shop, and I had to buy a lot of stuff, but unfortunately I did not have much money to spend with that. If I had I would keep buying and buying... It is worth to note that she was so bored inside there that she was almost fainting from boredom!! Hehehehe... (Right, Lica?)

After that we took a walk to the Capitol building, and wow... I want to have a place like that to live one day. We did not go inside, unfortunately, so I don't have an idea yet, about how my place is going to look like from the inside. But I don't care, I will use the outside as just a model for that, and the inside I can create based on the outside architecture, with a lot of rooms, secret rooms, secret passages, and things like that.

From the Capitol building to the Washington Monument. We went inside the Monument, and then we went up by elevator. There is a staircase inside with more tha 900 steps, but I guess it is closed to the public. The view from that place was awesome. It is the highest "building" in the city, and so we could see most of the city from that height. Inside the Monument, in the walls following the staircase, are the Memorial Stones, huge blocks of stones, each a gift from an US State or from an foreign country, US cities, US groups, or Masons (Actually each one is made from a different material, like silver, gold, jade, wood, cooper, etc... And every one beautifully crafted.) Unfortunately we could not see them properly, we just could see a few of them, while the elevator was going down, and a guy was explaining about these stones to us inside the elevator.

Around 17h the Sun was already setting, and we continued our way to the Lincoln Memorial, but in the way there are other Memorials. The World War II Memorial is a huge fountain surrounded by pillars, and each pillar representing one US State. Very beautiful. Then we went to the Vietnan War Memorial, a colossal wall, covered by a black reflecting stone, with the names of ALL the soldiers that died during the conflict. Gloomy. Also, near, was the Korean War Memorial, a lot of life-like real-size soldier statues, positioned as if they were walking through a battlefield.

When we reached the Lincoln Memorial it was already dark. There is not too much to say about it. Inside there is this giant Lincoln Statue sitting in something like a throne, and wondering about something. It was beautiful, flawless. Around the wall there are some writings, and some drawings, and sculptures. We spent some time there, to rest a little bit, and the we started walk back to the subway station and to get back home.
When we got home we were totally broken, we just ate something, and rested for the rest of the night.

I have not gone to the White House, but I could see it when I was inside the Washington Monument sighting deck. I could also see the Pentagon Building from there.

This day was worth my trip to Washington DC, and I have to return there someday to visit the other museums. But the trip was not over yet.

Washington D.C. - Friday

The trip to Washington D.C. was fantastic. I have left Ann Arbor at Friday morning, and the trip was uneventful until DC. Only a small 20min delay suffered by the bus that took me from Dulles Int'l Airport to Rosslyn Metro Station, where I met my friend. She had to wait me a little bit before we finally met. After that we found a place where we lunched. It was a kind of self-service chinese restaurant. Excellent food by the way... It was near the Rosslyn Metro Station, but I forgot the name.

In that restaurant, when we arrived, there were two military guys. One of them fully clothed in military outfit, but the other one, was civil outfits, like he was dressed as a kind of politician, or high ranking person. We were in the table just behind them, and while my friend went to take her food, I started listening to their conversation. Of course, I could not understand everything being said, and they were talking like friends, but what catch my attention was that they were speaking about military technology, nano-technology applied to military technology and things like that. I could not figure out exactly what they were talking about, but I guess it was some kind of secret military technology. Cool... I was so inconspicuous I could be a spy. I guess they don't even noticed that I was trying to pay attention. If my listening was better I could have all that information. (I guess it is time to get worried about being followed by undercover agents. :P)

After lunch we took the train from Rosslyn station to Fairfax, where my friend lives. I was carrying my camping backpack, totally full, and my notebook backpack, so I had to left my luggage somewhere before going out to start the tour through the area. After reaching Fairfax, we went to her house, where she lives with other two house mates, and I left my luggage there. It was already getting dark (around 17h), so we just decided to take a walk around her house in Fairfax, while we talked about random things. We bought some stuff to eat, and then we went back home. We just stayed at home after that. I met her other house mates, we ate something, and stayed there just talking and doing nothing, planning the other day. One of her friends, was watching a very old TV show, "Saved by the Bell" or something like that. It was a comedy show about some teenagers around their 16 years old, at the start of the 90's. It was fun to watch it, and remember when I watched it ages ago, but I never watched it that much anyway, and I know why, it is not good... I had some fun watching it, just for the sake of the old days.

Neve, Cozinha, Bomba, Viagem, Trabalho

Games and Science

The great hype of the moment regarding PC Games is a game called Crysis. It is a science fiction first-person shooter computer game, and the story revolves around the usual alien invasion, this time in a fictional future, and you are part of a military force bound to fight the invasion. Just the usual shoot all the aliens, or demons, or enemy soldier, or whatever you want, game. A kind of story that is getting kind of tired. Anyway... All this hype has nothing to do with its "revolutionary" story, but is due to the higher machine requirements, and the level of realism of the game.

The left side picture shows the real life version, and the right side picture shows the in-game version.
(Click for a larger version.)

As you can see in the picture above, the realism level in the game is simply outstanding. If you want to see more, take a look at this small video made by the guys at Tom's Hardware Guide showing some of the things you can do while playing the game, and pay attention at the graphics. The physics realism as you can see in the video footage is also unbelievable. Unbelievable is also the system requirements of your computer, if you want to play this game. I am not going to the details about the minimum and recommended settings to play the game, but I will just say that even the best PC computer in the market will not run the game with all maximum settings without glitches. If you are curious about the system requirements take a look here. Amazing to say the least.

The point I want to talk about is not exactly about the game itself. You can find more about the game in the links above, and all over the Internet. The main point of this post is to compare a game like this with current scientific simulations. How can these game companies make something so perfect that simulates our environment almost perfectly in real time, and in science we use codes to run models that sometimes are static models, and the code takes hours and hours to run. What is the problem here?

The first thing to notice is that even the physics in a game being seemingly flawless, the amount of simplifications or approximations made to simulate the physics are enormous. The laws of physics there are far from being perfect, but that does not demerit the game, it shows that the only real thing limiting the game engine is the today's computer hardware. There are really a lot of approximations, but the amount of details that you can see is also huge. So there is not only one physical process being calculated in real-time, but a huge amount of physical processes being calculated at the same time in real-time. That is what make the games of today so perfect, and in the future things will seem more and more real.

In real science you have to model the physics in a much more detailed way than in a game, and physics is not so simply as it may seem looking at the game. Far from that, actually. Most of the problems in physics cannot be solved without approximations, an even the largest computer clusters cannot compute some complex physical processes in real-time, and they usually took hours and days until some results can be obtained.

Looking at this game, and knowing a little bit about scientific simulations, something came to my mind. Most of the current computer simulations that are done these days are not as efficient as they should be. People still use a language called Fortran 77 in scientific simulations. A language older than me, and I am an old one! This old language is totally out of date, and surely is far from being optimized to run in our current processors. I don't understand why people in science tend to be so conservative regarding a programming language. The CPU of almost every computer today is also a multi-processor CPU, so parallel programming is starting to be a very useful skill, and surely these old languages are also not optimized to make codes that run in various processors at the same time. If you want to do something more efficient today, you have to evolve and forget about these old languages many scientists still insist to use. They are still good languages when you are learning how to code, but they are just that.

Another new concept that should be taken into consideration in future scientific simulations is that it is not only the CPU that can process data. Currently the processing capacity of modern GPUs (graphic processing units), or video boards, are larger than today's CPUs capacity. Until some time ago, GPUs were only useful in processing graphical data, and 3D calculations, but the new NVIDIA GPUs can be used to do any kind of calculations, using C programming language, and this can take fully advantage of the GPU hundreds(!) of on-chip processors in a optimal way (this technology is called CUDA - Compute Unified Device Architecture).

The gaming industry is always running a little behind the hardware development, and as far as I know, science is a lot behind the gaming industry. I know that learning science is not easy (far from that actually), and that to keep the pace with developments in any scientific field at the same time as you keep the pace with hardware and programming languages development is an herculean task, but a lot of improvement could be reached with a small evolution regarding scientific coding. Some conservative researchers, from the old school, need to to understand that a 30 year old computer language is not exactly the best to be used in our current computers. And even not-so-old languages like C++, must used in a new way to improve processing efficiency. Computer today are very different from computers 10 years ago, and science must evolve as the games do.

(Maybe I should not complain too much, in the current way Entropy tends to be maximized... :P)

Entropy and Global Warming

Saturday night, I am alone at home, after being part of a very funny "mock" Thanksgiving with the Astronomy Grad Students here in Ann Arbor. The party was really awesome, with great people and great food, but this time I decided to stay clean.

So here I am, sitting with my computer in my lap, hearing some music, in full control of my consciousness, and then inspiration came. Actually I was thinking about writing about this thing for a while now. The post today will be about Global Warming. Yeah... This will be fun. An excellent way to spend time in a Saturday night.

As a Doomguard, and a physicist I have to think in Global Warming in terms of Entropy. Global Warming is caused just by the increase of Entropy of our small planet. The increase of Entropy is always a natural process, the real point here is that due to humanity extremely high needs of energy, the natural process is being accelerated to uncontrolled levels. Of course, to produce energy, you have to produce heat, and heat in a manner of speaking is Entropy. There is no way to produce energy without increasing the Entropy of your surroundings.

As I share the Sinker point of view regarding Entropy, I guess in this case I have to help the Regulators, to reduce a little bit the Entropy increasing rate of the planet. Global Warming in my point of view, is not directly related to the Greenhouse Effect. The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is just proportional to the energetic necessities of the world, due to the fact that most of the energy produced in the world came from thermal power plants, and the burning of oil or coal, and the efficiency in these processes are at most around 50%. More efficient ways to produce energy will decrease the rate of Entropy gain of the planet, but Entropy will still increase, and then there will be different sources, alike Greenhouse Effect today, to blame for Global Warming. Another way to help decrease the Entropy gain of the planet is to decrease the energy needs of humanity, but that is probably out of question. The energy needs of this civilization just tends to increase, uncontrollably, and this will also lead to an uncontrollable increase of heat produced, and then no way to escape from the fearsome Global Warming.

Energy consumption will not decrease, so humanity needs to find a way to control its needs for energy, so Global Warming can be controlled. And humanity also needs to find more efficient ways to generate energy. These two things would help a lot towards controlling this problem, but anyway, the increase of heat will continue. As I believe in the laws of thermodynamics, and I don't believe in a perpetual energy source 100% efficient, the only way to solve this problem would be to produce energy using sources outside the Earth. The most straightforward answer for this conundrum is Solar Energy. That is the only actual way of reducing Global Warming on Earth currently known. The Sun is like a battery, there is no known way of pulling more energy than it generates, but it produces energy enough to sustain life on Earth for billions of years yet. Using the Sun energy we can lower the Entropy of the Earth, and in this way end once and for all the warming problem of the planet. Eventually the Sun's Entropy will reach values so high that it will become a red giant, almost enveloping the Earth orbit, and destroying this beautiful planet, and all traces of civilization here.

We can surely create a lot of power plants in Mars soil, this way we can generate enough heat to warm the martian surface, making the planet more susceptible to accept earthlike life-forms. Then using some interplanetary energy tranfer methods, yet unknown, to bring this energy to Earth. Maybe the microwave radiation background generated by the Big Bang could also be used as a clean energy source. There are many possibilities, but currently the only feasible one , to really reduce Global Warming, is the use of solar radiation as a source of energy. Nothing else is really a solution. While most of the energy generated in Earth come from earthly sources, there will still be heat being generated and the Entropy will still increase.

This is Entropy berk! It can be delayed but never defeated. So, lets embrace Global Warming, because we cannot run away from it, yet. Solar power is somewhat a reality, but only an ephemeral part of humanity energy is generated that way. There is a long and winding road ahead of us before humanity can use the Sun as its most important source of energy again. Decay, Death and Destruction will be always in our doorsteps, one way or another, so be used to it...

Ultimate Musical Geekyness

People know I am a true believer in Rock'n'Roll, but unfortunately I don't know how to play any kind of instrument. The only musical experience I had was playing Guitar Hero. But I really want to learn how to truly play an electric guitar someday.Well... At least, that was what I thought until I have seen the most amazing musical instrument ever built by man... The "Geekiest" Musical Instrument Ever Built...

Two Tesla Coils playing the "Super Mario Bros." theme. It is geeky, and it's pure Heavy Metal.

The Mirror of Eyes

There, somewhere between the border of the Mindscape and the Dreamland, lies the Mirror of Eyes, silent, with its countless eyes upon you, some of the eyes dead, some of them living, some real, but most of them unreal. Do not be fooled by them, they all are staring deep into your soul, waiting for the right bargain to be made. You might never feel Its invisible empty presence in your entire life, but it knows every secret of your soul... And to face It is to face oneself alone...

An Unknown Force, or just The Cube?

An ally is really not a friend. Allies can be trusted until some point, but where exactly is that point? I'm starting to wonder about it...

So, today I was there, just passing as a normal guy, raking the yard and the walkway, when I saw it... It was clearly watching me. Probably studying me from afar... One of Its minions? I don't know, but I saw one of those Malignant Squirrels, I have written about sometime ago, in the middle of the street... Maybe not exactly one of those, but I could sense Evil emanating from its eyes...

After my alliance with The Cube, I don't think It would send one of Its minions to watch me just like that, in plain sight. It just do not make any sense, but I know that I am far from comprehending Its ubiquitous atemporal brooding mind... Was that squirrel really one of Its minions, or have this alliance brought the attention of another Greater Force over me and over this place?

I've heard some rumors about another malevolent dormant Entity in this area. Now I am not so sure if that is really just a rumor. Have the Alliance awakened this Entity? I ought to be careful again... I cannot be caught in the middle of this ageless feud unprepared, and I will not... I know I am just a tool for The Cube, but I will not be used as just cannon fodder in Its machinations...

Whether it is The Cube, or this other Unknown Force, I will not be fooled... Or have I already been fooled by Them? My mind is not clear anymore... Are there answers for these questions? I do not think so, but I hope Destiny has other plans for my lost being...

Orkut e Facebook

No donuts for you!".

Eu sai do Orkut, o tempo passou, e eu voltei pro Orkut.

Definitivamente, eu me rendi ao Facebook.

this is Gustavo's profile

The Most Unexpected of the Alliances

...and so the unexpected happened. After running from my Destiny for so long, I decided at last to embrace it. I was running from the inevitable, I could not escape from it. Despair and insanity were taking me over. Then, out of nowhere, elucidation filled my mind, my thoughts were clear again, and I could perceive that my situation was not as dire as Reality wanted me to see.

I went to that once dreadful place, where It reigns eternal, silently and unchallenged, brooding over Its countless abyssal minions, devising unfathomable plans of conquest and destruction. I approached It, with no fear in my heart, and with true purpose in my mind. All my willpower was focused in only one thing...

After some deliberation, The Alliance was signed. That Alliance shall create waves of dismay that will resonate throughout the Earth. Tremble! mortals, for now I am allied with The Cube(!!!), the Destruction-Bringer!!

Halloween party

Halloween party. Tequila, cachaça (!) and capirinhas (!!!), more tequila and vodka. Nice people, music, a lot of fun. Totally wasted by the end...

Then... Headache, infinity thirsty, my body entropic levels out of control, laziness... And the worst, a void in my head... Something that should be there, but it is not... Argh!

Lesson learned: The Grinning Reaper does not like alcohol!

The path to Heavy Metal...

I gained my first Heavy Metal CD in my 18th birthday. It was a CD called "A Real Dead One", a live album from Iron Maiden. I guess I could not have chosen better than that to start. A live CD from Iron Maiden, with many of its great classics... I arrived at home and put it in the player, and then...

"Woe to you, Oh! Earth and Sea, for the Devil sends the beast with wrath, because he knows the time is short... Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast, for it is a human number, it's number is Six hundred and sixty six."

(Then it began: Dave Murray in one guitar, and Steve Harris in the bass guitar. Bruce Dickinson starts to sing. After a while Nicko McBrain in the drums, and Adrian Smith in the other guitar... and this is The Number of the Beast!!)

After that there was no turning back... I was lost forever, and the iron in my blood turned into iridium instantaneously. Heavy Metal running through my veins forever.

Two weeks later I had already other two Heavy Metal CDs. The second one was from a band called White Zombie, the band does not exist anymore, unfortunately, but until today they are one of my favorite bands. The song that lead me to buy that CD was called "More Human than Human" from the album Astro-Creep 2000, and by that time this music was playing on the radio (the dead, but never forgotten 107.5FM), and being aired on the MTV. And here is the video clip.

My life was already doomed, and there was another song playing in the radio that I needed by any means! It was the first track from the album Ozzmosis recorded by the master Ozzy Osbourne. The song's name is "Perry Mason". And that was my third Heavy Metal CD. (The video is slightly out of synchrony... bah!)

As I told you, it was REALLY impossible to turn back after all that. It was almost 12 years ago, a lot of things changed in my life, but Heavy Metal is a quiescent part of my life since that time, and I am sure it still will be when I reach the 250... And a long time after that, too...

GHofXaos's Note: I guess a lot of people will not be able to sleep at night for quite some time. Some people might turn themselves into psycho-cleaners, and then evolve into psychopaths...

CHEMISTRY: Mayu Yamamoto of the International Medical Center of Japan, for developing a way to extract vanillin -- vanilla fragrance and flavoring -- from cow dung.
REFERENCE: "Novel Production Method for Plant Polyphenol from Livestock Excrement Using Subcritical Water Reaction," Mayu Yamamoto, International Medical Center of Japan.

PRESS NOTE: Toscanini's Ice Cream, the finest ice cream shop in Cambridge, Massachusetts, created a new ice cream flavor in honor of Mayu Yamamoto, and introduced it at the Ig Nobel ceremony. The flavor is called "Yum-a-Moto Vanilla Twist."

GHofXaos's Note: You can't trust nothing vanilla- anymore.

LINGUISTICS: Juan Manuel Toro, Josep B. Trobalon and Núria Sebastián-Gallés, of Universitat de Barcelona, for showing that rats sometimes cannot tell the difference between a person speaking Japanese backwards and a person speaking Dutch backwards.
REFERENCE: "Effects of Backward Speech and Speaker Variability in Language Discrimination by Rats," Juan M. Toro, Josep B. Trobalon and Núria Sebastián-Gallés, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Animal Behavior Processes, vol. 31, no. 1, January 2005, pp 95-100.

GHofXaos's Notes: I ever thought that rats were one of the most intelligent creatures in planet Earth, superseding by far the human primitive intellect. This just confirms my thoughts. Only sometimes they cannot tell the difference... Amazing!

LITERATURE: Glenda Browne of Blaxland, Blue Mountains, Australia, for her study of the word "the" -- and of the many ways it causes problems for anyone who tries to put things into alphabetical order.
REFERENCE: "The Definite Article: Acknowledging 'The' in Index Entries," Glenda Browne, The Indexer, vol. 22, no. 3 April 2001, pp. 119-22.

GHofXaos's Note: I always had problems with "The" while indexing my songs!! A real must this article. I'm sure it will help me solve a lot of problems with indexing.

PEACE: The Air Force Wright Laboratory, Dayton, Ohio, USA, for instigating research & development on a chemical weapon -- the so-called "gay bomb" -- that will make enemy soldiers become sexually irresistible to each other.
REFERENCE: "Harassing, Annoying, and 'Bad Guy' Identifying Chemicals," Wright Laboratory, WL/FIVR, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, June 1, 1994.

GHofXaos's Note: Make love, not war!! I hope this hideous device does not befall in the wrong hands. Imagine some gay mob throwing that in the middle of a Hell's Angels meeting, or in the middle of a 90%-male-students class. The consequences could be disastrous to say the least!! (FEAR)

NUTRITION: Brian Wansink of Cornell University, for exploring the seemingly boundless appetites of human beings, by feeding them with a self-refilling, bottomless bowl of soup.

ECONOMICS: Kuo Cheng Hsieh, of Taichung, Taiwan, for patenting a device, in the year 2001, that catches bank robbers by dropping a net over them.
REFERENCE: U.S. patent #6,219,959, granted on April 24, 2001, for a "net trapping system for capturing a robber immediately."

GHofXaos's Note: They will not be expecting that. Unless they read the Annals of Improbable Research (a must reading even for bank-robbers).

AVIATION: Patricia V. Agostino, Santiago A. Plano and Diego A. Golombek of Universidad Nacional de Quilmes, Argentina, for their discovery that Viagra aids jetlag recovery in hamsters.

GHofXaos's Note: A very relevant study about such an extremely intelligent creature that can differentiate between backwards-Japanese and backwards-Dutch, and whatever other misterious backward-language we do not even imagine yet. I am sure they can speak scramblespeak too, and backward-scramblespeak!!
